How To Find The Right Fit: The Classic Swim Trunk

Finding the right pair of men's swim trunks comes down to four things: waist, inseam, rise, and liner. Get those four right and everything else follows. This guide walks through each one for the Bather Classic Swim Trunk — a mid-thigh, 5.5-inch inseam trunk we've been refining since 2013, built from 100% recycled materials with an exclusive quick-dry mesh liner.

How to Size Men's Swim Trunks: Start With the Waist

The most common mistake when sizing swim trunks is guessing. Don't. The Classic uses an elasticized waistband with an external drawstring, so the fit is adjustable — but your starting point should always be your jeans waist.

Match the waist of your favourite pair of jeans to the chart below. That's your size. The elasticized waist and drawstring handle the rest, including any flexibility if you sit between sizes.

Why the 5.5-Inch Inseam Is the Right Length for Most Men

Swim trunk inseam length is the most debated dimension in men's swimwear — and the 5.5-inch inseam is where we landed after more than a decade of refinement. Here's why it works: 5.5 inches hits just above mid-thigh on most frames, clearing the knee by a comfortable margin without riding up. It's long enough to wear off the beach — to lunch, around town, running errands — without looking like you forgot to change. And it's short enough to swim and move freely without bunching or dragging.

Men's swim trunks inseam length by fit:

  • 4.5 inches — shorter, more tailored, higher on the thigh. If that's what you're after, that's the Modern Trunk.
  • 5.5 inches — mid-thigh, versatile, works on most body types and most occasions. That's the Classic.
  • 7+ inches — closer to the knee, more coverage, closer to a boardshort silhouette like our Technical Surf Trunk.

The Classic is built for the guy who wants one swim trunk that works everywhere.

Understanding Swim Trunk Rise: Front and Back

Rise is the distance from the waistband to the crotch seam — and it's what most men don't think about until a trunk doesn't fit right.

The Classic front rise runs from 10 inches (XS) to 13.5 inches (XXL). The back rise is longer — 14 inches (XS) to 17 inches (XXL). That longer back rise is intentional: it gives coverage and prevents pulling when you bend, sit, or move. The difference between front and back is what keeps the trunk in place when you're active, without feeling restrictive when you're not.

If you've ever worn swim trunks that pull down in the back when you sit or ride up when you walk, rise is the reason — and the Classic is built to avoid both.

The Liner: Why It Matters More Than Most Brands Admit

Most swim trunks come with a scratchy, slow-drying mesh liner that men have been quietly cutting out for decades. We built our exclusive liner to fix that.

The Bather liner uses an ultra-fine 90% nylon, 10% spandex blend. Four-way stretch means it moves in every direction without pulling. It dries fast — significantly faster than standard mesh — and feels barely there against the skin. No chafing, no clinging, no leaving the beach still soaking.

If you've bought swim trunks with a liner before and been disappointed, this is a different construction. It's one of the reasons men who buy a pair of Bathers come back for a second and third colourway.

The Shell: What "100% Recycled" Actually Means

The Classic Swim Trunk shell is made from 100% recycled materials. Which material depends on the style:

Solid swim trunks are made from 100% recycled nylon. Recycled nylon is quick-drying, moisture-wicking, soft, and more durable than comparable synthetics — which is why nylon has been the fabric of choice for swimwear since the earliest days of recreational swimming.

Printed swim trunks are made from 100% recycled polyester from recycled PET bottles., which enables dye sublimation printing — a process that bonds colour directly into the fibre rather than onto the surface. The result is a pattern that stays sharp and fade-resistant season after season, wash after wash. Prints don't crack, peel, or fade because they're not sitting on top of the fabric.

The Pockets

Two reinforced side pockets, deep enough to hold what you need. A back pocket with a snap closure for keys, a card, or anything you'd rather not lose in the water. Side pockets are mesh-lined for fast drainage. A small eyelet in the back pocket clears water quickly — you won't come out of the ocean weighed down.

Men's Swim Trunks Fit: Getting It Right the First Time

After more than a decade of making the Classic, here's what we know about fit:

  • Match your jeans waist to the size chart. That's the most reliable starting point for men's swim trunk sizing — more reliable than height, weight, or general sizing labels.
  • The 5.5-inch inseam hits mid-thigh on most frames. If you're taller, it sits slightly higher. If you're shorter, it gives more coverage. Either way, it's proportioned to work.
  • The liner is what you'll actually feel. A quick-dry, four-way stretch liner changes how a swim trunk wears for an entire day. It's worth caring about.
  • Recycled shell holds colour and shape. Bather trunks are built to last multiple seasons — solid nylon for colour depth, recycled polyester for print clarity
